We’ve decided to duck into Puerto Los Cabos marina / resort just north east of Cabo San Lucas, it was windy and we could use some groceries. We have two mountain bikes and a small collapable Burley trailer that we envisioned using for grocery shopping.
We got directions from the marina office – recommending the Mega shopping store in San Jose del Cabo – she estimates about 1.5 miles away. With a little extra sunscreen we setoff for the MEGA.
The directions were good and we found the store directly. Locked the bikes and trailer outside and went in. Grabbed the shopping cart and immediately forgot we had biked to the Mega. Two bottles of wine, a quart of milk, 3 quarts of Yogurt, tons of fruit (apples etc), paper towels – the usual week’s grocery shopping. The reality hit us as we packed the bags for the trailer — this is no freeze dried food — every pound counts here. Amazingly, we managed to strap 50 lbs of groceries on the Burley and headed back to the boat. 1.5 miles felt like at least 5 miles…..
I’ve cycled over 30,000 miles – never with more than a spare inner tube strapped to my bike, and as Christine reminded me on the ride back – despite being a lifelong cyclist – I have NEVER riden my bike for shopping. The marina recommended a car rental – I’m sure they’re trying to figure out why a couple with a Nordhavn 62 would bike to the grocery. Some sick sense of “because we can”. A couple more trips like this and I’ll be ready for the Saturday Spectrum ride.
As I was telling the dock boys yesterday – Gray Matter is my home and my bike is my car.
Two thumbs up! Wish I was a stowe away about now–although the skiing is great in Tahoe this winter!
