Posada Conception — having trouble leaving …

2.3.2013 5:00pm

We had planned a short stay, 2-3 days, at Bahia Conception, just to dodge the forecast north wind. Bahia Conception is a large bay, 20 miles long, located 70 miles north of Loreto. We headed towards Bahia Coyote, 8 miles after entering Bahia Conception, for the best protection. Knowing it is a popular tourist destination, we were still shocked and overwhelmed by the amount of RVs at Coyote’s first cove, Playa Santispac. We went in a bit deeper, and dropped our anchor at Posada Conception, which seemed to be a bit quieter. Posado is a private community, with beautiful houses on the beach and up on the hill. A sharp contrast to our previous seclude anchorages — I wasn’t sure what to expect.

RVs lined up at Playa Santispac.

Beach community at Posada. A truly special place, as we learned later.

The closest town, Mulege, is 17 miles north. Not very easy to get to. So we figured we’d try our luck at the only local mini supermarket. We landed the dinghy on the beach and started to wonder around, trying to figure out where it is. A nice Canadian/American couple, who spent the winter down here, offered us a lift to the supermarket. The supermarket is indeed “mini”, with limited selection of fresh produce. The couple then helped us locate the truck which delivers fresh veggie and fruit. Our first taste of the hospitality at Bahia Conception.

Well, this was only the beginning. The next day, north wind still blowing hard, making it challenging to do any water activities. So again, we went to the beach and walked around the Posada community. A guy just beached his dinghy nearby, so we went over and said hi. We had seen him on a sailboat in the bay, and thought he was a cruiser, living on his boat just like us. We introduced ourselves, chatted a bit about cruising life. He suddenly said, “Come over. I’d like you guys to meet my wife”, and started walking towards a beautiful beach house. It turns out, Dave and Bobbi, a lovely couple from Montana, own a house at Posada, with their sailboat moored outside. Like most Posada residence, they spent winter down here, enjoy the beach and cruising in the Sea of Cortez. They welcomed us to the Posada community with unbelievable hospitality, driving us to Mulege for provisioning, inviting us for dinner and bonfire on the beach with other locals… We are having a fabulous time at Posada. We kept saying we’d leave the next day, but the next day came, we felt we should enjoy another day at Posada. So six days later, our anchor still hasn’t moved. I joked about our difficulty leaving Posada. Dave pointed out to a sailboat in the bay, “see that boat? A couple lived on that boat for 20 years. They came here after cursing all over the world, bought a house, and never left.”
